An Army Veteran’s Story – A long-term relationship

An unemployed, US Army veteran called in looking for peer support in 2021 stating that he was homeless and had a drinking problem. He called often and the peer provided ongoing support for two years while the Veteran was in recovery and getting certified as a Physician’s Assistant. Once he received his certification, he got a job making more than $150k a year.

This past March, the Veteran called and was talking about starting a new job. He felt happy about getting paid a great salary. He spoke of having a trigger that day and was trying to process it. He stated that speaking with the peer when he got triggered and having an outlet to reach out to help calm him down has been very helpful. He stated that he had started drinking again, but controlling it by staying busy and drinking a lot of water.

On a recent call, the veteran was doing great. He had not had a drink in 4+ weeks and had been staying really busy with work. He has to drive an hour each way to work, and that has been helping him to keep his mind focused on his goals. He thanked the peer for the support and for being there for him. He will call in if he needs to talk again.
