A Navy Veterans Story – Finding help around the corner
A Navy veteran called very emotional, sharing about the difficult and traumatic relationship he’s had with his brother and mother over the years. He had been carrying it around with him in silence, but on this day decided he was finally ready to reach out to try and get help.
His brother struggled with mental illness and years ago severely injured him. He forgave his brother due to his condition and the toxic environment they were raised in, but he still suffered from the severe trauma of the experience.
The peer listened to his story, and when he was done, the caller thanked him for listening because he had never discussed these feelings with anyone before and it was a struggle for him just to get through it. They both knew that this was just a powerful first step.
The caller was looking for ongoing mental health support. The peer was able to provide him with a resource that was physically located just blocks away from his apartment. The veteran was extremely grateful for the peers understanding and the connection to the resources he needed to continue his healing journey. And was even more grateful to discover that what he needed was right around the corner.
