A Homeless Veteran’s Story – Finding a new home
A homeless Navy veteran called Vets4Warriors. His ex-wife and daughter lived out of state, and his current marriage was falling apart. He was living in his car, eating one meal a day, and hadn’t had access to a shower in quite some time. His phone service had been shut-off, so he was using the wi-fi at a Starbucks to connect. He called looking for emergency financial assistance to get his phone service restored so he could be in touch with a potential employer for an interview he had scheduled for the next day.
He connected with a peer who provided him with several resources that could provide immediate assistance and was directed to a local shelter for a hot shower and a hot meal that evening.
He remained connected with his peer and received the ongoing support he needed to begin regular treatment with a therapist. In time, he found part-time work and was able to re-establish a relationship with his daughter and work on re-establishing custody. Now he has a place to live, is looking for more meaningful full-time work, and is beginning to create a social network within his new community.
He and his peer continue to have a meaningful ongoing relationship. The peer continues to call back regularly to provide support, and will continue to do so for as long as the relationship proves beneficial.
