Who We Are
Worried About a Veteran (WAV) and Vets4Warriors (V4W) have teamed up to build a community of support around gun safety to prevent Veteran suicide.
What You Get
Key into Care Packages contain a key lockbox to store the key to a Veteran’s firearm storage device, along with other safety and informational items.
How it Saves Lives
When you hold onto a firearm key for a Veteran, you are creating lifesaving space that will prevent them from having immediate access to their firearm during a moment of crisis. This box will help you keep your key secure and your Veteran safe.

Veteran Spouse, Mom, Caregiver, and a 2022 Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow
“I need you to take the key to the gun safe and make sure I can’t get it.” That was the order my Active Duty soldier gave me when he admitted he was in crisis. I was shocked and had no idea what I was supposed to do. My thoughts raced with questions… Where could I put the key that he wouldn’t find it if he dug through drawers? How could I keep it away from him when we shared a house? What if I failed? Why was he the one telling me this?
I had never felt more alone than that moment. Failure in this order meant I couldn’t keep my family safe, but I had no idea what to do. If I as a military spouse back then had the Key into Care package I could have said with confidence that I could handle what I was being asked to do and know that there was yet another layer of safety between my husband’s crisis and a split second decision.

How do I use my new lock?
You will receive a full instruction manual from the manufacturer with your keylock. Please review it carefully, including all safety information and disclaimers. Here are some tips to help you through the process.
- To open for the first time, slide the black button marked CLEAR down. Slide the silver button marked OPEN down. Open cover.
- Next, you’ll set your code which is at least 3 numbers of your choosing. You’ll find a turnkey inside the box. Use that to remove the single center screw of the white cover. Then, use it to turn the small black keys downward on the numbers you wish to use.
- Replace the white cover and test your code by sliding the black button marked CLEAR down. Type in the code and slide the silver button marked OPEN down.
- Now you can add your gun lockbox key inside of the keylock and replace the cover. You may need to type in your code to get the cover back on.
- Find instructions on how to attach/reattach the keylock to different locations in the manufacturer instructions.
