Black service members have played a vital role in our nation’s history, serving with courage and valor in every major conflict. From the fight for independence to today’s modern military, their contributions have shaped the United States and the freedoms we enjoy. This Black History Month, we take a moment to reflect on the impact of Black Americans and their legacy of service.

Early Service: Revolutionary War and Civil War
Black soldiers have defended our country since its earliest days. During the Revolutionary War, thousands fought for America’s independence. In the Civil War, over 180,000 Black men served in the Union Army as part of the United States Colored Troops, fighting to preserve the nation and end slavery.

World War I and World War II
Despite facing segregation, Black service members made significant contributions in both World Wars. The Harlem Hellfighters, an all-Black infantry unit in World War I, earned high honors for their bravery in battle. In World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen became the first Black military pilots. Trained in Alabama, they flew over 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa during the war.

Korean and Vietnam Wars
By the Korean War, the U.S. military had officially desegregated, with Black service members serving in integrated units across all branches of the military. More than 300,000 Black Americans served in Vietnam. Though they made up just 12% of the U.S. population, they accounted for 16.3% of the armed forces and up to 25% of Army enlisted personnel—but only 2% of officers across all branches.

Service Today
Black service members continue to serve at all levels of the military, from enlisted ranks to top leadership positions. Their dedication helps protect our nation and strengthens the armed forces.

This Black History Month we can honor those who have served and the nearly two million Black veterans in the United States today.
